Raksha bandhan is one of the famous festivals celebrated in India. The day commemorates a divine bond between brothers and sisters. Raksha Bandhan is also popularly known as 'Rakhi'. This holy event is considered as the traditional Hindu festival or sacred knot of protection. There are several historical evidences behind the celebration of the event. According to one of the Indian legends, Lord Krishna killed the evil King Shishupal in order to protect his people. Krishna was injured during the war which left him with bleeding finger. On seeing this, Draupathi immediately torn a strip of cloth from the end of her sari and tied it around his wrist. After this incident Krishna realized the depth of her affection and concern. He promised to repay this debt by protect her during difficult times. The day has been celebrated since then to acknowledge the sacred bond between brothers and sisters.

This special event is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shraavan according to the Hindu calendar. Hence the dates of the festival vary year after year. It generally falls in the month of July and August.
