In Philippines, Fatherís Day is a recent development which is observed on 3rd Sunday of June. There was no mark of Fatherís Day in Philippines during 1960s and 1970s. The Fatherís Day celebration came to Philippines in 1980s under the influence of American holidays and celebrations. The idea of observing the day in the honor of fathers began in Spokane, Washington. As per the records, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Fatherís Day while listening to the Motherís Day lecture in 1909. Sonora wanted to celebrate the day in the honor of his father, William Smart, who brought her up single handedly. The Fatherís Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. Later in 1972, President Richard Nixon announced a yearly Fatherís Day celebration.
